Mermaid by Ryn Gargulinski
for the Voodoo Sisters

They came from the dark and went right back there, camping at the boundary of the acceptable. Like the primeval soup that knit into an entity because of its drive to take shape and breath, The Voodoo Sisters was born.

The Voodoo Sisters is a collaborative Gothic Tribaret bellydance troupe whose debut performance was at Romka’s Belly Horror Show 2007 in Washington DC. We are based in New York City.

Who Are the Voodoo Sisters?

The Voodoo Sisters are the line you draw in the sand, and the step you take over that line.

We are the nervous laughter in the dark. The gravedigger scene in “Hamlet.” The Emperor Nero fiddling while Rome burned. The cheeky maidservants to the dark brides of the night.

We are campy and kitschy. We are pop culture whores. Like crows, we snatch at sparkling things wherever we find them: retro and cyberpunk. Dark and shiny. Goth and cabaret and tribal too. A heady brew.

No, really-- who are these people?

Magdalena Voodoo is a professional poet and old-school Goth. She has many, many years of training in jazz dance and classical Egyptian style, and is a fierce advocate of keeping the balance between dance and theatrics in theatrical bellydance. Find her on Facebook.

Melissa Voodoo is a professional anatomy nerd teaching somatic Pilates in Manhattan. She has a strong base in Turkish cabaret and folk dancing, and likes to mix in hip-hop and jazz as well. Find her on Facebook. Or follow her on Twitter.

Deirdre Voodoo is the mistress of the Nephron 2000, the world's most powerful mechanical kidney. She does both classical Egyptian and Turkish cabaret, and really is 6 feet tall.
